What is a Microwave Kiln

A microwave kiln is a miniature kiln which you place in a conventional microwave and it acts like a potter's kiln.  Glaze Microwaves kilns come in different sizes and are available as starter packs for beginners with everything you need to make your first fused glass pendant.

The microwave kilns are made of a ceramic fibre which is  a kiln insulator, it has a base and a lid. The inside of the lid is coated with a black compound which heats up when placed in a microwave. The black ring or inside coating of high temperature susceptor material (the black colored material).   Susceptor materials are materials that absorb microwave energy (like water, fats, oils, etc).   There are a wide variety of susceptor materials some of which reach very high temperatures > 1800 degs F.

Most common microwave kilns takes between 5 to 10 minutes to reach peak temperature ranges depending on the size of the microwave kiln and the microwave’s wattage.

The advantage of the microwave kiln over a conventional kiln is that it is a lot less costly to run and purchase. A conventional kiln can cost $1000’s, when a glaze kiln is a fraction of that.

Microwave kilns are ideal for hobbyist and home jewellery makers who would like to explore glass fusing without the large costs of a large kiln. Its also easy to use, quick and does not take up a lot of space.
